New Roads

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has one of the best road-building and road-maintenance programs in the United States.  The American Truckers Association recently voted Tennessee's roads as the best in the country.

TDOT currently has three major road projects that will directly affect the Macon County area.

1.  Improvements to TN 10

This project is due for completion within the next 10 years.  In this project, TN 10 will be extended from TN 25 down to Interstate 40 east of Lebanon.  Various improvements will also be made to the existing portion of TN 10 up to Lafayette.  This will give industries in Macon County a straight shot to Interstate 40.

In addition to the above project, TDOT is currently making improvements to TN 10.  This includes widening the road in places.

2.  Connector from TN 52 to I-40 at Cookville

New road is shown in red.

In this 10-year project, TDOT is planning a road to connect from TN 52 between Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs southeast to Gainesboro and continuing to I-40 near Cookville.  This will give Macon County an even closer means to access Knoxville and Atlanta markets.

3.  Upper Cumberland Development Route

This is a road-widening, road straightening project that runs across Tennessee from Macon County to near Knoxville in East Tennessee.  In Macon County, the project involves the TN 10 improvements (described in #1 above).  In addition, it involves improving TN 262.  TN 262 starts at TN 52 between Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs.  It runs east to Jackson County.  Please click on the thumbnails below to enlarge the maps.  (Macon County is at the top left of the first map.)

Note: you may download an Adobe Acrobat pdf file of the planned Upper Cumberland Development Route by clicking here.  The pdf file will allow you to zoom in and zoom out.  The file is large (1.2 megabytes) and may take awhile to download.  The pdf file was sent to us by TDOT.
