Electricity
Electricity is provided by Tri-County Electric Membership Cooperative which obtains its electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority.  TVA provides a reliable source of electricity from its hydroelectric plants, coal plants, natural gas plants and nuclear plant.  The cost of electricity from industrial customers is the lowest in the nation.

Gas
Lafayette is served by an extensive natural gas system which is run by the City and supplied from a major Texas Eastern Gas pipeline which runs through Tennessee.  [It is interesting to note that approximately 17% of the natural gas used in the United States flows through Tennessee at a point just 20 miles (32 km) west of Macon County!]

There are two fuel oil suppliers and three liquid propane suppliers in Lafayette.

Water
The City of Lafayette has an abundant source of clean, clear water for residential and industrial use.  They currently have over 6,000 customers on their water system.  The water's source is the Barren River and two springs.  Current capacity is 2,000,000 gallons per day, and current usage is 750,000 gallons per day.  There is a storage capacity of 1,300,000 gallons.

Wastewater Treatment
The City of Lafayette has an excellent sewer system.  They have completed construction of a new $4 million wastewater treatment plant assuring the City the capacity it needs for many years to come.  Current capacity is 700,000 gallons per day, and current usage is 400,000 gallons per day.  Storm sewer coverage is 20%, and city sewer coverage is 98%.

Telecommunications
North Central Telephone Cooperative provides state-of-the-art voice and data service to Macon County.  NCTC has all of the things you need including DSL lines, and high-speed Internet access.

Solid Waste Disposal
A sanitary landfill is located in Smith County.
